Two Solar Flares Light Earth’s Sky With Multicolored Auroras – August 3, 2011
On August 3, 2011 two solar flares were each accompanied by giant clouds of charged gas or coronal mass ejections aimed right at Earth which resulted in a beautiful sky show that can’t be missed. Just about forty-eight hours after NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory had detected the first eruption, the solar wind slammed directly into Earth’s magnetic field, creating a geomagnetic storm that lasted four hours.
Auroras occur when energized particles from the sun reach Earth and get funneled down the planet’s magnetic field lines toward the Poles. Along the way, the charged particles smash into oxygen and nitrogen atoms in our atmosphere and boost their energy, which ends up being emitted as colorful light.
Because they’re closer to Earth’s Poles, where charged particles of solar wind penetrate the atmosphere, the Northern Hemisphere’s higher latitudes traditionally experience brighter displays than areas farther south. Last week’s huge solar windstorm only added to the intensity.
Scientist say that we should expect similar storms and displays of the auroras in the future as the sun awakens from a period of record low activity and heads toward the peak of its current 11-year cycle.
London Riots – Anarchy Is Pathetic
About three nights ago some riots in London erupted after police shot a man by the name of Mark Duggan. The riots began in the London neighborhood of Tottenham where protesters hurled massive flaming objects at police while marching through the town in hoods gathering followers as they moved along. Many cars were set ablaze along with several buildings that were burnt to the ground. Almost every store was looted including friendly local businesses.
The chaos spread quickly into other neighboorhoods and has lasted for several days resulting in what appears to be a war zone. I truly cant tell you whether or not these London riots are still proceeding but from the looks of things, there has been a major shift in power in this city.
Many witnesses and protessestors claim this is part of a much bigger problem that the governement has been asking for. Im not too sure what all the controversy is about, but a lot of people are arguing over the necessity of these riots. Some are saying that Mark Duggan was a crack dealer carrying a firearm and that the police were right for simply wiping the scum off of the streets. Others are completely against the cops actions saying that there is no evidence that Duggan ever opened fired and the police and no reason to do so themselves.
Either way this is just another hopeless attempt for humans to feel powerful.
